On last week’s training call an owner brought up the serving size of Biotin in our EVERYDAY FIT.

The owner shared that a client had concerns that the 300mcg which is 100% of the recommended daily intake was possibly interacting with her medications and having adverse side effects.

… the conversation evolved to this question:

“Do we really need 100% of the daily intake in our products since we are recommending that they drink EVERYDAY FIT multiple times a day?”

What a great question, so I thought I’d take a moment to teach on it….

But here is the official statement that should ALWAYS be used when asked about medication interactions, safe to be used when pregnant, nursing or given to children…

From coach to coach here is what research supports about Biotin and why we chose to include it at 100% of the RDI. Let’s begin with what Biotin is… Think of Biotin as the “Beauty Vitamin” -- it is a water-soluble vitamin that is part of the B-family, also known as Vitamin H, it is responsible for converting nutrients into energy and plays an important role in healthy growth of hair, skin and nails. Long thick hair, healthy and youthful skin and strong nails are all connected to Biotin. Research supports that it is very RARE to find a deficiency in Biotin as we get all we need from the foods we eat. So the question is, why take more of it? There is substantial evidence that an increase in the bioavailability (more readily available in the body) of this nutrient has a positive effect on our hair, skin and nails -- especially for women who are pregnant or have experienced thinning of hair or hair loss. Now, more is not always better… in fact too much of most vitamins can create sickness. High levels of just about anything can turn the benefit into a toxic bad day… … the exception to consider with this is in the case of water soluble vitamins like Biotin. A water soluble vitamin means it breaks down in water. Through our natural elimination system (peeing, pooping and sweating) the excess nutrients flush out throughout the day. There has been no evidence to support that high levels of Biotin would be toxic but like anything else… please be responsible.

For all you owls -- this is a GREAT article. A 2015 3-Month, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study found Evidence to support Increased Biotin beyond the RDI found a significant increase in new hair growth and thickness without any negative side effects. There are hundreds of research based studies that support this nutrient, its positive effects, and overall safety for most people and if you’d like to nerd out some more please feel free to reach out and I’ll link some more studies. For the rest of the pack… here it is short and sweet. Research supports that it is SAFE to use, overdose and drug interaction is EXTREMELY RARE, and the positive benefits of increasing this NUTRIENT are very high… but like anything please consult with your physician. :)
