How to “Break Up” With Morning Coffee

I've relied on coffee to help wake me up for as long as I can remember. Recently, I've discovered why that's such a big mistake and I'll share that with you in just a minute.

First, let me introduce you to my new German Shepherd puppy! His name is Ness.

Like many puppies, he has a ton of puppy energy. So much so that I've been running with him in the mornings to help him burn it off.

Believe it or not, he's taught me a new morning routine that's all about how to hydrate.

At first, it was tough adjusting to this new routine because I've been doing my old one for over ten years.

I usually have at least one cup of coffee in the morning to start my day. (That's typically around 4 am, so I'm still a bit sleepy.)

Because I take Ness out running in the mornings, I've been finding myself recently feeling a bit off. I simply don't have enough energy, and I also started cramping up.

I didn't think anything of it at first because that's what comes with age, or so I thought.

What I soon realized was that I was becoming dehydrated and I noticed the color in my urine being darker.

After seeing how dark my urine was, it made perfect sense as to why I was feeling dehydrated. And why I was also getting dry mouth in addition to cramping up on our morning runs.

I also recalled that sleep makes you dehydrated too and I haven't been getting the best sleep.

You see, when sleeping at night, you lose up to 1 liter of water, which results in you waking up dehydrated.

There are several reasons why you can lose up to 1 liter of water a night:

  1. Your Breathing

According to the National Sleep Foundation, your hydration levels can drop by how you breathe.

"This is especially true if you breathe through your mouth, snore, or have sleep apnea. If you breathe through your nose while you slumber, you won't lose nearly as much water from your body," says the Sleep Foundation.

It's important to focus on keeping your mouth closed and nostrils wide open when possible.

  1. Working Out Too Late

If you fail to rehydrate after working out, you're going to become dehydrated

So if you're already losing up to 1 liter of water normally when we sleep, imagine how dehydrated we'll be if we don't rehydrate after a late-night workout.

  1. You're Sleeping In An Oven

Having your room too warm during the night can cause you to sweat.

Sweating is a natural way for your body to cool itself down when it's "overheating."

The National Sleep Foundation says, "An overly dry or warm bedroom can also lead to extra fluid loss during the night."

So when you're in a warm room, your body will lose more water to keep you cool.

A recommended temperature you’ll want to keep your room at is 67 degrees.

How Drinking Coffee First Thing In The Morning Makes You Dehydrated

You see, the caffeine inside the coffee we all love is a diuretic.

Diuretics make you want to go to the bathroom to relieve yourself.

It's because of this diuretic effect that causes coffee to affect your hydration status.

So with the combination of waking up dehydrated and drinking myself to dehydration, it's no wonder why I was cramping up on the sidewalk on my morning runs with Ness.

Here’s Ness’s 2-step Hydration Morning Routine

Because of Ness's insights from our morning exercise, I decided to recreate my morning routine to keep myself hydrated instead of dehydrated! Here's what works best for me right now:

  1. Drink 12 -16 oz of water first thing in the morning at room temperature. This will help you immediately start replenishing the water you lost while sleeping.
  1. Wait 90 minutes to have your first cup of coffee. This was the biggest adjustment for me because I'm a huge coffee lover, but trust me, you'll feel the difference.

When you use this 2-step morning routine, you'll see the difference in how you look and feel.

Why? Because you'll be making yourself hydrated instead of dehydrated.

This is bad news because the toxins and waste your body needs to get rid of will begin to build up. Which can then become deadly.

It's important to note if you're dehydrated for too long, your kidneys can stop working completely.

Being Dehydrated Will Cause Your Kidneys To Practically Go On Strike.

Similar to how waste management does when their needs aren't being met, which then causes trash to pile up in the streets.

Now if you're reading today's post that most likely means you truly value your health. So I want to share one more powerful secret I use to boost my health and master my hydration.
